![]() I have to disagree with you about recommending Conch Republic, Boathouse, and Dante's to someone as places that are non touristy. Grunts and Blackfin Bistro are both great for spectacular food in a tropical garden setting.įinally, check out the Afterdeck at Louie's Backyard (next to Dog Beach) and Salute on the Beach. The Smokin' Tuna also fits your description and is a great spot for drinks, dining and music. ![]() All of these are on the water and have a healthy local following. I like the Boathouse for happy hour drinks and food, Conch Republic Seafood for 2/1 drinks at happy hour, Schooner Wharf for cold beer and music, and Dante's for lunch by the pool. Most spots around the Key West Harborwalk (Bight) are fun. You will find that as Key West is a tourist destination, it's likely most spots will have tourists in them, but it's a sliding scale as to how "touristy" a place is, and there is quite a range of views about that on this board. Look at The Banyan for a tropical setting, close to many activities with a very cool "old Key West" feel as a lodging option. ![]() When you're ready to reenter society, catch the passenger ferry to Ocracoke and set up shop with fried oysters and hush puppies on the roof deck of Howard's Pub, open seasonally. On a clear evening, you're in for the starriest night of your life. Look for shells and sea snails, get hypnotized by the powerful Atlantic waves, or pitch a tent right on the sand. Natural dunes sling low over wide-open, empty, and amazingly pristine beaches. Sand paths wind past grassy salt marshes, wispy evergreen shrubs, and sky-blue inlets. ![]() Beyond the village, miles of pure coastal wilderness await. Visitors dock in Portsmouth village, a once-thriving seafaring port dating to the 1700s, now a ghost town with a cluster of historic buildings - the post office-slash-general store and a one-room schoolhouse - to check out as you please. The Outer Banks is a major vacation destination, yet one of its islands is so secluded, even many North Carolinians have never heard of it: Portsmouth, only accessible by ferry or private boat. ![]()
